Weir safety

Sockeye crossing over a weir Safety is a priority at a resistance board weir site for both the public and weir operators. Like all field equipment, proper safety precautions must be taken to minimize risk of injury. Education of proper use when near the weir is key to help promote safety. Primary measures can include posting informational signage in the project vicinity, developing instructional flyers that can be available to the public on-site or online, and installing warning and passage guidance signs along the river channel to instruct users on how to safely pass the weir.

Safety tips:

  • Always have a crew of at least two people on-site during weir maintenance
  • Always wear a personal floatation device while on the weir
  • Train technicians in CPR/First Aid
  • Post warning signs upstream and downstream of the weir location
  • Use regulatory buoys and channel markers to guide safe passage
  • Utilize flashing safety lights to guide safe night passage
  • Add external lighting to help illuminate the weir structure at night
  • Solar powered motion lights work well in remote locations
